Chairperson of the Parliamentary committee set up to select and recommend the next Public Protector Cyril Xaba says Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka has fulfilled all the necessary requirements to become next Public Protector.
He says her experience and understanding of the law is what makes her tick all the boxes for this position.
While the African National Congress (ANC) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) proposed Gcaleka for the position, the Democratic Alliance (DA), Freedom Front Plus (FF+) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) opposed the recommendation.
Xaba says, “Gcaleka’s interview went very well, she was prepared, she is very clear on the requirements of the office. She is honest, independent, can perform her work without fear, favour or prejudice, and she demonstrated ability to express values of the constitution in the manner she handled herself. On those basis we felt she should be put forward as the nominee for the position of Public Protector but only if the president agrees to parliament when it comes to her name.”
